Tamika has now been employed with ConAgra since August 2005 and anticipates a full-time position at ConAgra in the future. "I have been able to get back on track, get my own place and pay my bills," said Tamika.

Benjamin Lackey was between jobs in 2005 when he was referred to Goodwill Staffing Solutions. At the same time, June Henderson, human resources director at AIT Laboratories, which provides laboratory services for the health care, pharmaceutical and forensic professions, was consulting with Goodwill to learn more about finding employees for work both in and outside of production.

"Most placement agencies abide by a six-month temp arrangement; if you want to hire one of their workers before then, you have to either keep paying fees to the agency according to your agreement or buy them out of their contract," Henderson explained.

"Goodwill maintains a 30-day temp period, a much easier commitment. Plus, that"s a more reasonable time frame in which to decide if an employee would be a good fit with our company."

For both parties, Lackey's placement was a perfect match. His 30-day assignment quickly turned into a permanent one. Lackey, who works in facilities at AIT, celebrated his one-year anniversary with the company this past November.

"At the time I started with AIT, I'd been in a (substance abuse) recovery program for three years, and those first years are a real struggle. You're changing your whole life around, your entire way of thinking," Lackey said. "A big part of addiction is dealing with what people think of you, and going to Goodwill for job help was my first step in making peace with my past."
